Frequently Asked Questions
Do you work with medical aids?
Yes, we work with medical aids for our hearing services. As each medical aid has its own rates, there may occasionally be a small difference not covered. We’ll always let you know about this before you leave the practice.
For speech-language therapy, we can help you submit claims to your medical aid. You may need to cover part of the cost yourself. Assessment fees are payable at the first visit, and ongoing sessions can be paid monthly. We offer convenient payment options, including card facilities.
Do medical aids cover hearing aids?
Medical aids often offer some level of cover for hearing aids; however this is dependent on your specific medical aid and plan option. We will assist in liaising with your medical aid and submitting any relevant documentation they need to authorise hearing aid funds. You’ll be informed as to the hearing aid benefits available and if any shortfalls are applicable.
When should I have my hearing tested?
We recommend that adults have their hearing tested every year, especially after age 50. If you’re struggling to follow conversations, turning up the TV, or finding it hard to hear in noisy places, it’s a good idea to book a test.
For children, hearing should be screened at birth, during the preschool years, and again in Grade 1. Early testing helps catch any issues that could affect speech, language, learning, or school progress. We offer quick and simple school-based hearing screenings—contact us and we’ll gladly assist with arranging this through your school.
At what age can hearing be tested?
We can assess hearing at any age—from newborns to older adults. Different types of tests are used depending on age and developmental stage. Visit our Services page to see more about how testing is done at different ages.
What happens during my first hearing consultation?
Then we’ll do a series of hearing tests in our sound booth. Right after the tests, we’ll explain the results and provide you with a copy. If needed, we’ll also discuss next steps, recommendations, or referrals. We welcome family members at this appointment—they can offer helpful insight and learn how to better support your hearing.
If I need a hearing aid, what happens next?
Hearing aids come in different styles and technologies—including options that sit behind the ear or use bone conduction. Some devices may involve a small surgical procedure.
Choosing the right hearing aid can feel like a big decision, but you don’t have to do it alone. Your audiologist will guide you through the options based on your hearing needs, lifestyle, and preferences. We’re here to help you make an informed and comfortable choice for your hearing health.
If you decide to go ahead, we’ll help you with the next steps, including any paperwork needed for your medical aid. We’ll keep you updated throughout the process and make sure your new hearing aids are fitted and working just right for you.
What should I expect at my child’s speech-language assessment?
The first session usually takes 1 to 2 hours. We’ll begin with a conversation about your concerns and gather important background information about your child’s development, medical history, and more. A hearing test may also be recommended to rule out any hearing difficulties.
Your child will be assessed using standard tools, observations, and play-based activities. We’ll discuss the results with you and provide a detailed report. We’ll also talk through any recommendations and outline a treatment plan tailored to your child’s needs.
